What is Codex—and when should you use it?
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. Think of it as the part of ChatGPT that can work directly with a website or app project: inspect files, change code, run commands, fix errors, and help test the result.

You need ideas, explanations, research, writing, screenshots, troubleshooting, or someone to tell you the next button to click.
🧑💻 Use Codex when…
You have a website, app, or coding project and want AI to actually work with the project files—such as finding a bug, editing code, adding a feature, or testing a fix.
Easy way to remember it: ChatGPT helps you figure out what to do. Codex can help do the coding work inside the project.
Option 1: ChatGPT desktop app
This is the easiest place for many beginners to start on Windows or Mac.
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app and sign in.
- Open a chat in Work or Codex.
- Codex can use the desktop app's built-in browser for websites and local development.
- The built-in browser has its own sign-ins and browser state; it is separate from your normal Chrome profile.
Option 2: Desktop app + Codex Chrome extension
Use this when Codex needs the Chrome browser you already use every day.
- Install the Codex Chrome extension.
- Keep the ChatGPT desktop app open while using this desktop/Chrome workflow.
- Choose Chrome when the task needs your existing Chrome profile, signed-in websites, open tabs, cookies, or Chrome extensions.
- This is different from the desktop app's built-in browser.
A simple beginner workflow
How to use Codex on a real project
1. Open ChatGPTSign in to the desktop app with your ChatGPT account.
2. Open CodexChoose Codex when the job involves the actual website or app files.
3. Open the projectGive Codex access to the project you want it to inspect or change.
4. Pick your browserUse the built-in browser, or Chrome when you need your existing Chrome sign-ins and tabs.

About plans, limits, and credits
Do not assume everyone gets a fixed number of Codex credits. Codex access and included usage depend on the ChatGPT plan, and larger or longer jobs can use more of the allowance. When available on your plan, additional credits can be purchased after included usage is reached. Check Codex Settings → Usage Dashboard to see your current usage and the options available to your account.
